Culture: Not just for yogurt

If you visit the Answers section on LinkedIn.com, you will observe a striking phenomena: almost anyone who asks a question about any given topic receives at least one answer. Regardless of the subject matter, there's always someone who knows something about the topic, or can recommend someone who does. What is more interesting is what all answers have in common.

door64 in the news...

Well, as some of you may have already seen, we're in the news! The Austin Business District magazine went into circulation this week, and the cover article details how door64 is making an impact in the Central Texas technology community. Matt Scherer did a great job authoring the piece.

Here's to you for making 2008 a great year, and there's much more to come in 2009!

Opportunity and Despereaux

This weekend I watched The Tale of Despereaux at the theatre. One theme from the story is that the little mouse Despereaux is not afraid like the other mice, even though they are taught so in school:

[Despereaux’s teacher shows a picture.]
Teacher: You didn't cower?
Despereaux: It looks like a sword.
Teacher: It's a carving knife.
Despereaux: It's beautiful!

As the mouse keenly observed, the difference between a carving knife and a sword is only who’s wielding it! None of the other mice ever considered being on the offensive in any situation that included such weaponry.

Hitting the glass door: A lesson in awareness.

After attending the Austin Tech Happy Hour last week, I had an unfortunate accident. No, nothing involving vehicles. The incident I'm referring to is when I attempted to walk out of another local pub, only to discover a hyper-clean glass door blocked my exit. This realization was not made before I walked straight into it, abruptly knocking it open with my forehead, and causing some nearby onlookers to snicker. Embarrassing? You bet. Damaging? Only to my ego. Though I risk additional embarrassment by blogging about my screw up, the lesson is more important: It's what you DON'T see that can hurt you...or at least keep you from moving forward.
