RFC: New idea for "door64 awards"

It's important to give recognition where recognition is due.

I venture to say that most of us have our favorite technology blogs, or networking / career-oriented blogs, or even favorite local technology companies in our area. As a community of over 7500 local technology professionals, why don't we publicly congratulate those people or businesses who are doing an outstanding job?

So the idea came for a first-annual door64 Technology Community Awards (a.k.a. the door64 Techies?), where our own members nominate and vote in "best of" class categories.

Here are some ideas for categories:

  • Best Overall Texas Blog
  • Best Technical Blog
  • Best Career Blog
  • Best Texas Software Company
  • Best Texas Semiconductor / Hardware Company
  • Best Texas Technology Start-up Company (under two years old)
  • Best Texas Technology Recruiter
  • Best Texas Technology Recruiting Firm

I would value your input here, since I'd rather not derive all the categories alone. If you think some should be added or trimmed, please comment away.

Also, at the last door64 meet-up, someone suggested crowd-sourcing websites that our members find most useful in their job search, or for keeping up on technology. This data could be compiled as list for everyone else to benefit. Thanks Dave for the excellent idea!

Again, please comment below with ideas or suggestions for categories, or what other information you might like to see from such a survey.

Matt, that's a great idea.

Some category suggestions:
- best community discussion (in blogs or forums)
- best Door64 event: most useful, best run, best attended
- best Door64 event photo or video
- best Door64 success story

Thanks Jane. I was originally only considering entities outside of door64, but I do especially like your idea of a "door64 success story".

Best Web page with links to job search resources. Example (which won't win but is a start): http://home.earthlink.net/~mcmullen7/jobhunt.htm

I suggest adding Best Executive/Life Coach category, and I nominate Doug Whatley http://www.linkedin.com/in/dougwhatley

I met Doug through a recruiter at a coffee shop in North West Austin, which is a perfect example of what Doug calls "webbing." I call it networking on caffeine. Doug has a innovative product called "Personal Intellectual Property" or PIP that drives the continuous improvement and learning in his followers. Why do those of us in the know follow Doug? Because PIP works! The proof is in the great opportunities landed by PIPers.

Thanks very much Jeffrey for the suggestion. Not taking nominations yet, but when the time comes you can nominate him!

I'd like to see a category for Best Texas Startup Blog! We have so many entrepreneurs around - it would be great to see a list of the leaders who want to share their secrets.

Good suggestion Lisa. So you're saying the best blog that talks about start-ups in Texas, or the blog (from a Texas blogger) that talks about start-ups in general?

I also imagine start-ups and entrepreneurship come under the same heading.

Or the best blog by the leader of a Texas start-up?

Well, along those lines, what about best corporate blog by any tech company in Texas (start-up or otherwise)?

Hi Matt, and others.

Celebrating success is too often overlooked. We fly though phases and infrequently "high five". Celebration is uncommon amongst our breed. I am glad you are encouraging it.

While the initial list may be hard to quantify, the idea behind it is important to explore.

I think a more appropriate general category of awards are topics that that equal success for Door64.

For example:

  • Recruiter who has placed the most employees from Door64.
  • Company who has hired the most from Door64.
  • Individual who has benefited most (in terms of .... uhhmm ... something) from Door64.

What I am floundering with are categories that align to the vision and mission of Door64. Goals and metrics should be directly aligned.

And for the record, you oughtta get an award. I do't know you. Might never meet you. But you deserve a blue ribbon.

With Deep Respect.

Matt? Where are you? Hello? Helloooo? Echo. Echo. Echo.

This blog has been "sticky"ing on the front door of the site for over 71 days. Refresh doesn't werk.

Yes, it has. Don't worry, I'll be making some new announcements shortly, and the front page will have new news :)
