Out of area job postings...

softwarejanitor's picture

I know the reality is that there just aren't enough job opportunities for the huge glut of tech talent we've got here in the Austin area... So it is likely that some people may have to relocate elsewhere to find a position which fully utilizes their skills or offers them room to grow.

All that said... I hate it when I see a job posting that is very obviously NOT in Austin, but doesn't say where it is in the posting. I won't publicly "out" the particular offender who spurred this posting (and it isn't the first either), but if you're curious, send me a message and I'll tell you which one I'm thinking of.

Please job posters... There is nothing wrong with trying to tap the huge pool of super people here, but please, please... Be honest about what your opportunities really are, and especially where they are. It does nobody any good to play games with this. I think it is better to be up front if a job requires relocation than to spring it on a hopeful candidate after they are interested and try to talk them into it. Of course sometimes that will work, but other times (and I think more often) you will just end up getting rejected (and thus have wasted both party's time) or you will get someone who is desperate enough to relocate even if they don't want to. That may end up blowing up if they don't like where they end up and become disgruntled or homesick enough they quit and move back.

I haven't seen this on

I haven't seen this on door64, but I'll take your word for it that this happens elsewhere. I can understand that such practice would truly be a tease to follow-up and find out the opportunity is elsewhere.

The particular job listing I

The particular job listing I was complaining about was posted here. It was posted by an Atlanta based company which I could find no local Austin presence for...

That said, you are correct that there aren't many like it compared to other sites. I think in general it is less of a problem these days because with the huge gluts of talent available in most markets there is probably little if any reason to consider non-local candidates let alone actively advertise for them.

When I find companies that

When I find companies that post positions located in other area, I email them directly. Sometimes I may miss one or two. But the guidelines for posting jobs clearly states that the positions MUST exist in Central Texas, OR telecommuting must be available. Otherwise, this site would turn into any other nation-wide job board.

It is theoretically possible

It is theoretically possible that they might allow telecommuting, but the ad in question didn't mention it, and it seemed like a high enough level position where most companies wouldn't be anxious to recruit someone non-local. Generally if they are looking for someone to telecommute they will say so prominently in the listing.

I understand what you are saying about job postings here should be in Central Texas... I agree completely... I think local forums should stay local. But even on national sites I really hate it when people post jobs so they show up in a local search for Austin, but the job is really in some crappy place like NYC, Seattle or CA... Of course it is even worse when they don't say that, but you find out they've posted the same job in 20 different cities besides the one it is really in.

Yeah, I've seen that before

Yeah, I've seen that before too. Reminds me of websites that don't tell me the cost for their product/service up front. I usually don't bother because I figure I'll be gouged.

That is probably a safe

That is probably a safe assumption most of the time...
