HR AND BUSINESS 101 TODAY; KNOWLEDGE EQUEALS MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Human Resource professionals are a critical part of the leadership in any organization and your role can impact a variety of factors that affect retirement planning, insurance and risk management. Understanding Insurance and Risk Management is essential to a HR professionals’ development. This program will establish a foundation of knowledge upon which you can build your skill set in these areas of business.

Risk Management, Workers’ Compensation, and Retirement Planning—How Knowledgeable HR Professionals Will Make a Difference.

This three hour session will be divided into two presentations by insurance and financial planning professionals.

Michael Guthrie is a Sr. Investment Advisor at University Federal Credit Union. He has over 10 years of experience in financial services and specializes in serving the needs of members who seek financial planning and investment council. He is licensed for Health, Life and Disability Insurance in the State of Texas, and his NASD Securities Licenses include Series 6, 7, 63, and 66. He is registered with CFS, L.P., and in the states of Texas, California and North Carolina. Michael graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration from Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State). Mike focuses on providing a comprehensive financial assessment in order to ensure a prudent plan tailored for every client’s specific goals and expectations. He frequently facilitates workshops and seminars on a variety of investment and retirement topics.

Retirement Planning: Understanding how retirement planning and benefits can affect you and your employees is essential in creating an attractive total rewards package. By being aware of potential areas for confusion or stress you will be prepared to select the best retirement plan, thereby helping your employees through the difficult decisions that they will be faced with during a transition or job change.

This workshop will break down complex financial information into useable tools to enable you to gain personal control of your own financial situation as well as a more in-depth understanding of how to direct your staff during times of economic transition. You will learn how to assess your own balance sheet and cash flow as well as be able to identify potential pitfalls during unforeseen financial transitions.

In the course of a diverse 12-year career in various aspects of commercial lines insurance, Lisa has a proven track record for risk improvement with a specialty in complex Workers’ Compensation programs. During her tenure with Ward North America she developed and managed the Workers’ Compensation program for a large self insured corporation, Randstad North America. Additionally, she was brought in to overhaul an existing program for the City of Houston. She was charged with a complete review of operational processes, loss analysis and medical management initiatives to improve quality and customer service delivered to the city’s risk management team. Within one year, she was able to substantially improve the average cost per claim to the City while developing ways to improve service to both internal and external customers.
Lisa served in both a Claims Management and Marketing capacity with Zenith Insurance Company specializing in Workers’ Compensation. She served on the House Bill 7 Network development Team. She then joined State Auto Middle Markets’ Texas division, in the role of Large Account Manager managing the delivery of services to large accounts with revenues in excess of 10 million. The complexities of liability, property and fleet management equipped her with the skills necessary to manage all lines of coverage for larger firms. Lisa recently she joined Frost Insurance in their Austin branch as an Insurance Broker. Developing long term relationships through a focus on quality and delivering on commitments is critical to the success of any professional. This is accomplished through being a consultant and resource to her clients. Lisa holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Houston with a focus in Industrial and Organizational Psychology and Business Management. Additionally, she is a Certified Insurance Counselor and is pursuing her Risk Management certification.

Risk Management and Workers’ Compensation: This session will provide Human Resource professionals with a foundation and understanding of the principles of insurance, risk management and an analysis of risk as well as an in depth looks at worker's compensation. You will:

Understanding the interrelationship between the insurance company, broker/agent, and my organization
• Understanding the difference between Property and Casualty Insurance and Employee Benefits and Group Health
• Understanding how underwriters evaluate and price a risk
• Knowing how information can be a powerful tool in negotiating premiums
• Understand 4 key areas of Risk Management (Identification, Analysis, Control and Administration)
• Know how claims impact insurance costs
• Understand how the Human resource professional can impact worker's compensation through Analysis of Workplace Risks to employees, Developing Procedures that will mitigate exposures to claims, Developing and understanding the investigation and documentation process and knowing their role in facilitating communication between the company, the adjuster and the injured worker.
