Annual Distinguished Professor Series: Professor Richard Baraniuk on The Open Access Education Revolution
The Rice Alliance-Austin Chapter is pleased to announce that the 2009 installment of our annual Distinguished Professor Series will feature Rice University professor Rich Baraniuk. Professor Baraniuk is the Victor E. Cameron Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Rice and is a noted authority in the fields of signal and image processing. In addition to being an innovative thinker and researcher in signal processing technology, however, Professor Baraniuk has also earned renown as a visionary leader in developing internet-based educational platforms and communities.
In this talk, Professor Baraniuk will give an overview the past, present, and future of the open access education movement in the context of Connexions (cnx.org), which invites authors, educators, and learners worldwide to "create, rip, mix, and burn" textbooks, courses, and learning materials from a global open-access repository. He is not only a leader of this movement and winner of multiple research and teaching awards (Cambridge, Edutopia, Harvard, MIT, NSF, Rice), but his research has led to the creation of InView Technology Corporation. Networking and refreshments will precede the talk.
