Topic/Title: Thermal Management Techniques for Light Emitting Diodes

Abstract: Light Emitting Diodes (LED) are expected to replace the incandescent and compact fluorescent lighting in the next few years. LEDs conserve less power, thereby saving more energy, and also provide an environmentally sustainable technology. According to Department of Energy it is estimated that switching to LED lighting over the next two decades could save the country $120 billion in energy costs, reduce the electricity consumption for lighting by one-fourth, and avoid 246 million metric tons of carbon emission. However, there are some barriers for deployment and this is due to the efficiency of LEDs measured by Lumens per Watt and is impacted by two technological challenges:

1. Driver Efficiency (Efficiency in Integrated Circuits which provides a stable power to the LED)

2. Thermal Management (Efficiency of LED impacted by the junction temperate of LED. Heating impacts the CCT and performance of LED).

The techniques used to solve the efficiency uses are discussed in the presentation. These include development of innovative driver integrated circuits for LEDs and new types of thermal interface materials for reducing the LED junction temperature.

Speaker: Rekha Bangalore

Rekha K. Bangalore is the founder and CTO of Nanothermo, a start-up company based in Austin TX. Nanothermo develops thermal interface materials for improving efficiency of Light Emitting Diodes. Ms.Bangalore has worked in semiconductor industries including companies like Intel, Motorola, and Freescale for over 20 years. The core competencies include design for test and verification of system on chip designs and microprocessors. She is currently a validation lead consultant at Freescale Semiconductor and an adjunct faculty in Austin Community College.
