Anyone interested in forming a tech startup?

I believe that the right group of people could come up with some great ideas for a new company. If any of you are interested in discussing some possibilities please post a reply in this thread. Let's form a group and build something really cool, and make some money while we're at it!

I would not expect you to

I would not expect you to quit your job, there are plenty of companies that started out as part time or after-hours endeavors. I'm mainly interested in building a team and brainstorming some ideas at this point. There's a whole lot that can be done on the web without spending a lot of money, for example with Amazon AWS you can roll out virtual servers and pay as you go. This might be an ideal way to test out some ideas without pouring a ton of money into infrastructure and hosting fees.

The TiE Austin Funding Forum

The TiE Austin Funding Forum piqued my interest, and I submitted an executive summary of my business plan last week. TiE Austin has extended the submission deadline by 10 days, to Monday May 4. For plans to be considered, we need to join TiE ($100/year) by May 6.

For a minor investment in group membership, this looks like a great way to get coaching and introductions.

If anyone is interested in discussing ideas for an electric vehicle maker and rapid prototyping center, please let me know.

I love the idea. Let me know if I can help in any way.

I speak Geek, and I speak Customer.
I have experience with product usability, web interaction design, product information architecture, and all that stuff that lets you make customers happy in the first place so you don't have to deal with unhappy customers who suck up your time because they need your help to make the product work.

I also have experience with the stuff that customers never know about - plans, specs, business process design, look and feel, translation.
Yes...I'm a technical writer.

For the right concept, I could commit some time and energy to helping it get off the ground.

Hey Y'all, If you are

Hey Y'all,

If you are serious about starting a startup together, be aware that at Matt's event on Thursday we, Tech Ranch Austin http://www.techranchaustin.com are launching an employee to entrepreneur program that you might take advantage of.

We're working on getting local sponsorship of this program. We are expecting several teams on top of the teams that we already have in our innovator program at the Ranch to participate in the e2E program (employee to entrepreneur).

What I would specifically like to help you guys out on (if you are interested) is the sheer amount of scar tissue that I personally have for launching 7 startups on my own (investor backed and bootstrapped).

It is possible to launch a startup. In fact, if you have been laid off or fired (as I have been in the past, several times) this is one of the few ways out to creating the work that you want to do.

I will continue to review this thread - in case you guys have questions about what we are doing.

We're going to have a free introduction to the program (which will have valuable content, even if you don't decide to go through the program at 1:30 pm on Thursday, at the Door64 Event.

I will personally be available to talk with you in the back of the room about your startup. Come talk with me, for free, no commitment, about getting your business off the ground. I have the scar tissue to tell you exactly what I personally have seen in doing so.

Best of luck with your ventures,
Kevin

I would like to meet with you at the Door64 event. Can you share a little information about your seven startups? I'd like to know a bit more about the ventures you've been involved in, how the companies are doing today, etc.

Second try on meeting...

The tech fair was GREAT (thanks, Matt! you ROCK!) but getting together there didn't work out as well as we might have hoped - mainly because the event was such a good idea that it was jam-packed.

Can we meet at some reasonably central location some time in the next few days? I'll bring my laptop and plan to capture the discussion.

Would Sunday afternoon work for you guys?

Location...The Upper Crust at 45th and Burnet Road is good but closes around 5 or 6 pm, and might not have enough space. Other ideas?

While I do not have IT experience at all, I am a technology entrepreneur who has raised "other people's money" and is nearing "nirvana" (raising the first huge round of funding needed to commercialize the non-DoD technology).

I'd be happy to help/consult in any way needed or desired.

Karen, i'm going to bail out and suggest we reschedule--i think this thread has fallen off the radar, since i am the only one who's accepted so far.

How about we post a new thread with the place, date and time? I suggest Sunday May 10, no earlier than 5pm, at Flightpath. (making it later, afternoon activities aren't interrupted) That gives everyone a week to see the new thread.

Would you like to post the new thread, or shall I?

I don't think Mother's day is a good day to try to schedule a meeting. My experience is that weekends are a bad choice for meetings. Try a Monday or Tuesday evening.

Might not be able to make Flight Path event as I'm already committed.

But I have experience with startups to large business's in the product and project management role. I have experience taking products from pre-concept to cradle to grave.

I have extensive International experience as well. Especially in Easter Europe, Middle East and Asia.

Being that I was part of the recent IBM layoffs (11,000 and counting) I'm available and given that I survived 8 previous rounds of layoffs before being tagged I must not be an idiot (sorry small IBM joke).

I miss the energy level that a start-up has. The us against the world feeling and really want to get back to that type of environment after several years in large corporate.

Cheers,
Ray

There are many sacrifices ahead.

No, I am not well versed in IT and software, even though my Company's technologies both require sophisticated software to enable the systems. That doesn't negate my experiences as a technology entrepreneur and risk taker.

What do you think is the first sacrifice to be made (aside from the uncertainty of next week's paycheck)?

There's a link there to allow interested folks to say when they're available to meet.

stonewolf's picture

So far all we have is a

So far all we have is a bunch of folks who have identified themselves as being interested in a "tech start up". So good so far. But, we haven't been able to get enough interest for people to get together for a meeting. Why don't we try brainstorming right here for a while. If we come up with something more specific we should generate a bit more enthusiasm.

First question, what is the long term goal of the company? Is the plan to 1) build a company, sell it, and cash out? Or, is the plan to build a company, make a living off of it, and operate it for the rest of your life? The strategies are very different for each of those scenarios. Of course, no matter what the initial plan you might wind up with either outcome.

In either case, the end goal changes the range of products we might produce. If the goal is to be bought out by IBM you are going to go after a different product space than if your goal is to be bought out by AT&T or Verizon. Then again you are going to go a different direction if you want to remain independent forever.

Secondly, how do we want to make money? I'm really fond of the subscription model with small fees being collected monthly from a large number of people. The revenue model bounds the possible products.

How do you feel about having a place of business? Some people consider it a necessity, some feel it is superfluous. Those two kinds of people don't work that well together.

Are you OK with taking a percentage of profits or do you *need* a salary? If you really must have a salary you should drop out now because you are not suited to founding a company. The difference between a founder and an employee is, in my mind, pretty simple: The employee is able to pretend there is no risk so long as they get a regular pay check. The founder faces the risk every day and has to be able to do what ever is necessary to come up with that pay check or be willing to fire the employee.

That discussion leads to the question of what legal structure do you want for the company? Personally, I'd like to try something structured like a legal or accounting practice with partners and associates with pay based on a percentage of revenues.

Hopefully there is enough in this posting to get people discussing something more interesting than where to meet.

BTW, I'm a teacher with a background that ranges from search engines, to compilers, to the computer graphics industry, to video games, to strategic technology analysis at SBC (now known as AT&T).

Just now catching up on the thread, and certainly like the idea of kicking off a high tech start up. Being semi-retired (37+ years in IC Layout, etc) with a full range of industry and non-industry related interests and skills, I am highly interested in joining a group of entrepreneurs to develop the next best thing.

Week days or evenings work best (weekends are reserved for family and personal time). So, I will follow this thread, find out about meetings, and join in when I can.

This my opinion, if you are interested in starting a company, you should be able to commit at least some time to meet and brainstorm about it... if you are too busy to schedule some time for this, you are probably too busy to start a company... please if anyone is truly interested in doing this let's set a time and place and meet not later than Friday. I would tend to agree with you about being able to commit time, which is why I've decided it would be best for me to bow out for now because I am just too busy between my day job and other scheduled commitments I have over the next couple of months.

Please let me know the best way to proceed.
