Systems Administrator II, The University of Texas at Austin

Purpose of Position: Oversees the installation, configuration, and maintenance of Red Hat Linux systems in support of business requirements.
Essential Functions: Consults with customers to identify hardware and software needs. Coordinates and conducts software installation and upgrades to operating systems and layered software packages. Maintains systems in accordance with established IT policies and procedures. Makes recommendations to enhance the systems and monitors to achieve optimum performance levels. Ensures server data integrity by evaluating, implementing, and managing a schedule of system backups. Directs hardware and software audits of servers to ensure compliance with established policies and configuration guidelines. Work with technical team to achieve group goals and objectives.

Required qualifications: Has knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures in systems administration. Typically relies on instructions and establish guidelines to perform the function of the job. Ability to learn university system. Systems administration training and experience administering Linux systems. Additional requirements: Two or more years of professional experience with RedHat Linux system installation and administration. Requires experience with PXE (network based installation) and Kickstart installation processes. Requires ability to document activities and solutions. Must be able to independently troubleshoot Linux and network problems. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications: Linux configuration management experience (bcfg2, cfengine, puppet, Cobbler, Red Hat Satellite) desired. One or more years of professional experience with Windows system installation and administration. Implements solutions to problems of diverse scope in specific areas, including data analysis to identify root cause and contributing factors. Demonstrates independent and correct judgment to perform all actions within job function. Assists in the development and implementation of standard operating procedures.
