What social networking sites do you use? Facebook, MySpace, Bebo, Linkedin, Google's (I forget the name), or ??? How do you use these? Which social networking sites are hot, and which are not?

LinkedIn is the only one I use. I won't use Facebook because of who owns it now, and MySpace is... well, too unprofessional. I think Google's is called Orkut or something like that if memory serves. I get invitations to join Spoke, Spock, Konnect, and a bizzillion other LinkedIn copy-cats all the time, but I haven't bothered to try any of the others. LinkedIn seems to have the most people on it.

Orkut that's it! It didnt' really catch on did it? Linkedin is for the serious socializers. Facebook has leapfrogged everyone by making their api so accessible to developers.

I would appreciate the experience of seeing Mark Zuckerberg speak this year at SXSW.
I was a volunteer 3 years through college. I remember the first year Napster came to the trade show, no one knew who they were. 2 years later, SXSW invited Napster to speak.

Hey!
"Zuckerberg, the 23-year-old wunderkind of the social media business, will deliver the keynote presentation on Sunday March 9. SXSW Interactive runs from March 7-11 and features more than 500 speakers, 150 panel discussions and an array of other events."
For those of you who are seeking jobs, I've read articles about employers checking the social networking sites to narrow down their list of candidates. Consider modifying your profiles and access accordingly.

I know for a fact that employers and recruiters do it. On a certain level while it may get me "weeded out", that also works both ways. I am not sure I want to work for a company that is so narrow minded that they'd be offended by anything that I have on my LinkedIn profile or that I posted here. I'd like to think that quality employers value people who are honest, have personality and don't think they need to be afraid to express themselves.

I also am a LinkedIn junkie. I get all sorts of request to join other groups, and respond back to let them know that I can only keep up with a few networking sites, and to please connect with me on LI; that is my professional site choice.
BTW - I've got openings for QA and Sr. App Developers here in Austin, long-term (6+months) and great pay. Please let me know if you're interested and send your resume - ccolley@vcfo.com.
I am now a junkie of three sites (other than door64): LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter (being the very newest).
I receive all kinds invites to [what I consider] yet-anothers like Plaxo et al., but I don't have the time. Realistically I have to limit my social networking or else I'll never meet anyone face to face!

I get invites to all sorts of other networks all the time... So far I've pretty much decided to limit myself to LinkedIn and here. I occasionally look at other people's Twitter, but I am not interested in putting myself out there that much -- not that I am interesting enough to warrant it to begin with. Facebook as I've said before I won't use because MS owns part of it.
I just joined twitter, and I have some ideas for how to integrate it with door64. The big benefit of twitter is its ubiquitous access from almost any location (mobile or computer), and relative prevalence among techies.

I can sort of see the point of Twitter for people who are "movers and shakers" who are online mobile a lot and doing things that are interesting. Sadly I'm just not really one of those people anymore.
Well, it's not necessarily what you're "doing", but maybe what you're thinking. It's much like a short version of the discussion forums. When you find an article about the IT shortage myth, you post it on here, right? You could just as easily post it to your twitter.
You can spawn others to think about what you're thinking, and maybe provide some on-the-spot input.

Hmmm... O.K., I can see that, although what I'm thinking seems to be about as scintillating as what I'm doing lately... but anyway, I guess what I'm saying is that this forum does what I need well enough, I'm not sure what I'd get out of Twitter other than perhaps more immediacy and maybe some more eyeballs.
Now there's one more option: Instead of "what are you doing" (which people already are using for very frequent "brain telecasts"), how about stating "what do you need to know now"? So change the paradigm from stating to asking. Others can chime in to help. Conversation already happens in real time with Twitter, so the culture is there. Let's morph it a bit into something that can help each of us.
So I'm thinking about an experiment on door64 along these lines.

Interesting... although I am "offline" enough of the day lately that I'm not sure I fit well into the Twitter model. I will be interested in seeing what your experiment here is all about...
Yep, not everyone is online. The advantage of twitter is that many people are using it now, and it has multiple (already proven) access methods. You need not be online if you have it on your mobile phone.
We'll see. Might work, might not. Want to follow my instincts on this though.

The trick with twitter is filtering. There's too big of a stream to deal with (esp if you have 4,815 followers like I do). So "alertthingy" and "thwirl" are a couple of Adobe Air apps that let you do this. Esp. alertthingy, it filters just the stuff that interests me.
LinkedIn. However, it depends on what you need it for.

60 million users and counting.
twitter, facebook, bebo, and pownce mainly.
Thanks to SXSW my springnet facebook account has swelled up along with my twitter following. I've added some very cool video apps.
I'm as usual confused about giving out the url for my facebook page. Does this work for you or not?
