BBS and forum software

I'm looking for a good bbs alternative to the ancient "Yapp" that I've been using for the last 10 years. I use Yapp on http://spring.net and it's nice but it's way outdated. It was orginally developed as a shell app to be run via telnet and ssh and was retrofitted in to a web app.

Yesterday I took a look at vbulletin, there's phpbbs and others. What do you use and recommend?

I've thought about writing a combination BBS and web app, but have never gotten the ambition to do it. I wrote BBS software back in the 1980s, but that is like another lifetime ago.

What is your pick now for bbs software? If you had to choose?

I haven't looked into it that much. A friend of mine uses something called BBS100 or something like that. It is O.K., but a little flaky. I'd probably roll my own.

I'm leaning toward vbulletin because some guy named dingdingding came on my lifecast yesterday and gave me a free 100 day trial. He works for the company and has done a lot of heavy duty customizations. He's also helping us customize wordpress.

I personally would probably not go with something that wasn't "free" even if I didn't have to pay for it. I've been burned (or worked places that had been) by closed software for that sort of thing too many times.

good point. that's defintely the downside of vbulletin vs. phpbbs, my second choice.

How does the drupal bbs stack up against the dedicated bbs software like vbulletin and phpbb, etc? Has anyone had experience with it?

You're using it right now. You tell me :)

It's outstanding. I know Wordpress is going to roll out a new bbs as part of the initiatives the $29 million in funding they got is making possible. I'd have to say this blows away vbulletin, phpbbs et al.

Well I finally got a decent install of drupal with the plugin http://civiCRM.org for tracking memberships, contributors, and running email lists. It does a lot!

Now I need to figure out what plugin Matt uses here for this awesome bbs.

Matt?

Hahaha yes, I just downloaded the awesome_bbs module, inserted "door64" as the title, and viola!

:) Thanks for the compliment!

I have a lot of modules installed. Too many to enumerate here. If you're interested in some specific functionality, let me know. The secret though is in the configuration and site setup after the modules are installed. That's a ton of work before going online.
