LOCATION: Austin
VENUE: Sun Microsystems, 5300 Riata Park Court, Building 8 - Longhorn Conference Room
TIME: 6:00 PM

Please join us for the February 2008 meeting of the Austin Sun Users
Group. We meet on the 3rd Wednesday of every other month. This is a
great opportunity to network with your peers in the Austin area.

"Innovation Matters: Multi-Core Multi-Thread in your DataCenter"

The computer industry has always had a fixation with megahertz. CPU
cycle times. Clock speed. Sun's UltraSPARC processor has been obsessed
with something entirely different: maximizing the throughput of
real-world applications and workloads. What's the difference? Put it
this way--it doesn't do you much good to have the world's fastest car on
a jammed freeway. With traditional processor technology, blazing-fast
microprocessors are held back by memory bottlenecks. But with chip
multithreading (CMT), the revolutionary technology behind Sun's
Throughput Computing strategy, it's like having more lanes open on the
freeway. Let me explain how it works and how you will benefit from this
technological innovation today and in the future.

We always welcome your input regarding topics and speakers. If you'd
like to become involved in ongoing planning, please consider becoming a
board member. Send an email to austinsug@austinsug.org to indicate your
interest.

Years ago I was responsible for starting a Sun Dealership in Austin for one purpose, to sell to the Semiconductor companies, esp. Sematech and worked for several years as a Solaris system admin.

How "green" are sun's new servers?

Who is planning on attending this?

I'd like to. But not sure yet.

What is the situation with Sun in Austin?

Who sells Sun?

And who are the main consultants that support it?

And how strong is the user group?

I used to work for a Sun VAR years ago, but it wasn't here in Austin and they've been out of business for a long time. I know a few people who work for Sun, but none here in Austin. I'm not even sure who in town sells Sun gear anymore. All the Sun gear where I work now is old except one quad Athlon 64 Linux box. Just about every place I know that traditionally used Solaris have switched to Linux.

Well, they must be alive and kicking to have this event.

Well, I'm happy to see them trying to make it, as the x86 and PPC need some competition... I just don't personally know who is buying their new gear with the exception of their x86-64 stuff. The quad Athlon 64 Sun box we have runs quite nicely, but like I said, we are running Linux on it, not Solaris.

Yeah, most of the folks I know with Sun boxes are running Linux on them now.
