SXSW: Cool Tools

During the conference your arms will grow tired of lugging around bags. Putting even one more ounce of paper in your pocket will seem like a chore.
Look into all of the cool tools that SXSW has created instead. Some are designed specifically for mobile apps so you can access panel and party schedules wherever you are on something you already have to carry - your phone.

I'm probably the only one
I'm probably the only one around who not only doesn't carry his phone all the time, but I don't even have a phone capable of running mobile apps...
Well most of these only
Well most of these only require a phone with mobile web access. Maybe this will give you a good excuse to upgrade. :-D
If you followed any of the
If you followed any of the other threads... I'm still using an ancient Motorola Star-Tac... Its got a 4 line monochrome LCD, it isn't exactly "mobile web access" capable! Verizon sent me a letter a few months ago telling me I'd have to upgrade or lose service as of 2/1, but apparently they either backed off on that or something because it is still working. Heck, its still on the original battery. They just don't make 'em like that anymore.
Yes I've followed - hence my
Yes I've followed - hence my comment that maybe this will give you a good excuse to upgrade
.... as if the threat that Verizon is going to discontinue your service isn't enough to prompt you...
I was just saying you could upgrade to something simple - with just mobile web access - if you can't stand the idea of a full crackberry experience..
Yeah, they don't make them like that anymore.
Actually I'm kind of holding
Actually I'm kind of holding out for the next generation of iPhone clones come out. I've seen press release data about one Tiawanese made one that is open, runs Linux (so I can write my own apps for it) and has a few nice things the iPhone doesn't like a USB port and a SD memory card slot...
Most of the closed phones just kinda leave me cold, and I'd hate to buy something expensive like an iPhone that isn't readily hackable and then have something better come along and be stuck.
Depends on if you want to
Depends on if you want to 'unlock' it versus 'hack' it versus 'jailbreak' it. You have to jailbreak to either unlock or hack it. Unlocking is important if you want to use it on a network other than cingular. Hacking is important if you want to run 3rd party apps.
Of course, until they have an update that if you install will 'brick' your phone.
So now I've run out of my daily allotment of techie phrases.
The issues you describe are
The issues you describe are what has kept me from seriously considering an iPhone even though it looks pretty cool.
It's too bad you aren't on
It's too bad you aren't on Cingular. I probably have about 4 phones that have a variety of web-enabled functionality and are less than 1-2 years old max that are literally sitting in a bag at my house.
Maybe they are unlockable.
Maybe they are unlockable. It is really annoying that the cell phone companies have to try to make phones non-interoperable.
I hope they pass that
I hope they pass that interoperate law!
