Is this a good place to talk taxes and such?

I always wonder why big corps get Research and Development budgets (they have big $ spent on accountants).

As a small guy - don't some of us buy something like the iPhone to try it out as a dev opportunity - then never use it? To me that is R&D cost. I'd like some info on how to better get tax writeoff on that kind of business mistake / research /learning.

I think this is a community discussion about how entrepreneurs can help each other build their businesses. I'm not sure if the discussions will dive into that detail; will have find out :)
