Thanks for everyone who contacted me with leads, I really appreciate it. This site is great.

I'm happy to announce that I've accepted a position with Dovetail Software here in Austin. It's a great team and I already have history with them so I'm looking forward to starting soon.

Sincerely,
Chad

Congratulations... Did you find out about the opportunity through networking or was it a posted job?

That's fantastic - great news! When do you start?

Just for a data point, how did you end up hearing about the opportunity? Was it from your previous connections there?

Thanks folks. I found it through my network. Actually, I used to work for this company a few years ago. I'm coming back to work on the next generation of some of the stuff I was working on there before. Should be a nice easy transition and fun work. Plus the people there are great and I'm good friends with them all.

There you go: the power of networking! Another example of how jobs are found through the people you know.

Again, congratulations! Have a good weekend!

So much of it is "who you know", especially in a struggling job market where so many positions are filled before they are ever posted or advertised... unfortunately that puts relative newcomers like myself (I've only been here for around 7 years) at somewhat of a disadvantage... Although I've tried to network as much as I can, its harder when due to the aftermath of the crash I've only worked two places since I moved here so I don't have as many job related contacts as I probably would in a more healthy job market.

Have you considered doing a regular technical blog? I started my blog about a year ago and my network has literally exploded since I did that.

Also check out Twitter. Start going to local user groups meetings. Start going to some conferences that are maybe outside of your normal sphere of knowledge. Consider QCon, OOPSLA, JAOO, etc. These are great conferences with some serious brilliant people [seminal authors, luminaries, etc].

Polyglot programming is where it's at now, consider picking up a new language that's way outside of your norm (like Groovy, Ruby, Python, Boo, Eiffel, Erlang, Haskel, etc) and start blogging about it. You'll get tons of hits and make some really great friends that way.

I've never really gotten into blogging because I doubt anyone would care what I have to say. Twitter even less so... I've commented on that around here already. Unfortunately scheduling has prevented me from attending as many user group or other meetings/conferences as I'd like. Girlfriends/fiances/wives tend not to like that sort of competition for time I've found. I already deal with C/C++, Perl and various shell scripting on a daily basis and I've done Java and other stuff in the past. I've looked at Ruby and Python but haven't had enough time or reason to delve into them much more than that recently.

So what you're saying is you're just like everyone else? :)

Yeah, I'm just plain pretty boring... Anyway, I think my posts around here and a few other forums I frequent are probably enough of an outlet for me right now. I post so much around here I sometimes fear I make a nuisance of myself.

Yeah, definitely. I had been working with several recruiters, but they weren't bringing me very good opportunities. I don't think it was the recruiters' fault.

I would agree, it isn't the recruiter's fault. I've been looking for 5 1/2 years, there just aren't very many good opportunities out there. Not to say there are no opportunities out there at all like it was during the 2001-2005 era, but the quality is generally poor. Anything really good I think is getting quickly filled with "insiders".
