Unix/Linux/OS X Systems Administrator
Background information
- More than 20 years experience with Unix, more than 10 years as an unofficial systems administrator
- More than 8 years experience with Linux, as a hobbyist, with a small network of computers at home.
- Have used and administered (unofficially) OS X servers, and desktops, since OS X debuted. They are much like a variant of BSD, with an advanced user interface.
- Built a comprehensive, fully automated backup system for eleven Xserves, running OS X Server, using rsync, ssh, rsa keychains, and good old bash shell scripting, that I have been maintaining and improving for more than four years, with no data loss to date.
- Have built several web sites. I'm familiar with HTML and CSS. I use DreamWeaver for fast prototyping, and also edit code directly. I am currently working on a documentation web site for my department.
- I have used the following languages in the past: bash, csh, ksh, PHP, Perl, Java, C, C++, Fortran, Pascal, Object Pascal, Visual Basic and HP/Basic. Some of these I would have to re-familiarize myself with, but I am very skilled in algorithm development. And I find picking up new programming languages fairly easy.
- Currently learning Ruby and MySQL. I am familiar with other versions of SQL.
- I have built several computers for myself and others. So, I am quite familiar with computer hardware.
- My systems administrator colleagues, where I work, consider me to be more than competent, resourceful and innovative; especially considering that, formally, I'm not a systems administrator.
With my experience and skill set, I believe I would qualify as an entry level, or junior systems administrator. I am very enthusiastic and devoted. I enjoy learning new things, and I'm open to new ideas. Won't you give me a try?
