"Broke 2000"

Submitted by Ms.G on Mon, 06/02/2008 - 9:07am.

When I saw the subject line of the last Door 64 newsletter, I thought there was event coming up called "Broke 2000" -- as in some kind of celebration of poverty in the New Millennium.

I think I'll make it my next party theme...

I thought the same Ms. G.

Congratulations Matt and door64 on meeting this milestone! I appreciate the great work you are doing by connecting the High Tech professionals in and around Austin.

Thanks!
Raghu

I thought I was the only one who had that thought cross their mind...

How long until we reach 4000?

Submitted by matt on Mon, 06/02/2008 - 10:54am.

haha yeah, sorry about that! But if I said "hit 2000" instead, that might sound like I'm a big meanie.

4000? Well, that all depends... Hopefully less than another year! Viral marketing works exponentially, right? That's the plan.

Yeah, I try to turn as many people onto the site as I can. If everyone else does the same then we could reach the next big milestone quickly.

I've mentioned this site to several of my co-workers. I don't know whether they'll ever avail themselves of the potential opportunities that this site (and other online professional networking sites) provide. I was actually surprised that I was the only one from my department that has an active profile on LinkedIn. I had, at first, thought that I was late to the game. Go figure.

Actually, since our department was re-organized and merged with our sister IT department, I've discovered a couple of other co-workers are actively networking. One of them, though, is a temp that only works here occasionally. The other, I've never met in person, and his name isn't even familiar.

When I first joined LinkedIn a couple of years ago I was one of the first from my office to be on it, but now a pretty large percentage are and some of them have fair sized networks.

I've mentioned it to my co-workers but I don't think very many have joined yet, I've also referred a number of recruiters who've contacted me and at least a few of them have signed up.

My employer is also currently going through a merger, although I don't think it will do much to change the plans to shut down the division I work for over the next year.

Hey Matt,

Many Congrats on achieving the milestone. As a participating user and beneficiary of your hard work and true dedicated effort I thank you.

On a sobering note it reminds me of how long I've been on the job market. :-(

On an energetic, upbeat note it's also very positive and powerful to see how much the site has grown in such a relatively short span of time.

CYA @ GTA tomorrow.

Thanks
kmac

Wow... If you believe the hype in the press, experienced Project Managers should be more than average in demand. PMP certified too. What is the matter with these employers around here?

C'mon recruiters/hiring managers, can anyone give kmac a hand?

I dunno what's going on with the local market.

I have now expanded to the entire US of A. I do have some specific preferences on locations but I will entertain all viable offers.

Thanks
kmac

I know where you are at. I may end up having to relocate when my current job ends next year. Unfortunately it seems like 99.9% of the good opportunities that come my way are located elsewhere.

Hopefully housing values will rebound a little, because with the falling property values I'm badly upside down at the moment.

Ha! "Broke 2000" sounds like the title of a chapter in my biography, after the stock market crash that year.

Followed by "2001: An Economic Calamity."

OK, clearly I chose the wrong keywords for my newsletter title!

Heh, heh. Actually, I think you chose well. Look at how it stirred things up.

That's a good thing.

Yeah, that's true! Maybe my next newsletter title should be even more provocative.

"Top 10 ways to slim down [your resume] this summer!"
