Today more than 200 computer and peripheral companies are located in the Austin area producing a wide range of computers and peripherals, including printers, monitors and storage devices. Dell Computer Corporation is the area’s largest private employer with over 16,000 employees.
Semiconductors
There are over 100 semiconductor and electronics-related businesses located in the Greater Austin area, employing more than 17,000 people. Some of the major employers include Motorola, Applied Materials, AMD and Samsung. Combined with other companies such as Intel, Silicon Laboratories, Tokyo Electron America and Cirrus Logic, they make Austin one of the world’s key semiconductor centers.
Software
Software us one of the region's most dynamic industries. There are more than 500 companies operating in Austin employing more than 28,000 software developers. Among notable software firms in the region are IBM, BMC Software Computer Sciences Corporation and Catapult Systems Corp.
Biotechnology
Austin is home more than 85 bioscience companies that produce products and services such as pharmaceuticals, preventative medicines, medical devices, laboratory tools and analysis.
