Networking groups in Austin

Nothing else comes to mind. Networking has got to be the toughest part about this job search thing, at least in my case.

Actually, something does come to mind. I know there are a variety of job clubs in town, just not many of them are for high-tech audiences, at least from what I can gather. There is a list on the DBM portal. I'll see if I still have access and get it for you later.

Girl Scouts promotes this as an opportunity for young girls:
"During this all day event at the Austin Convention Center, learn how to roadmap your future and develop personal networking skills. Hear dynamic speakers share stories of success, self-esteem and leadership. Visit with women leaders and gain insight into making life decisions and career choices."

There may be some networking going on there.

I know of several groups. Up until last year there was a group called Austin Chips... but I think they've been inactive for awhile.

There's also a new SystemVerilog user group that has had one meeting in Austin so far, and plans to have one meeting a quarter. The first meeting was very good, and well attended.

IEEE seems to have a lot of events, though I haven't managed to make it to any of them. The most active group seems to be the Austin chapter of the IEEE Computer Society. I think they've been meeting once a week at the National Instruments building.

And of course, for the verification folks there's DV Club, which has been growing so fast it's getting hard to find venues large enough. I think there were 170 attendees at the last one, and over 500 members in Austin.

The DV Club has been growing and very popular and yes, we are currently researching into venues that can support the number of guests to invite. I think the event will be for the members who RSVP first.

It depends on what kind of networking you are looking for. I'm fairly new to Austin, but have seen a good amount of networking here. I guess if you look for it, you will find it.
I will say that the door64 event and this site are on my top 5.

Austin IGDA doesn't meet much (neither does my group, the AIGD, right now) but they are good groups for game developers. Austin Community College has the most active group for game developers right now (generally the first wednesday of a month unless there is a holiday or conference going on)

I personally have attended some of the IEEE Consultants Network meetings, some of which have been very interesting.

There are also a number of local Linux and Unix-related user groups here in Austin, including Austin Linux User Group (see http://www.austinlug.org/ ), Central Texas Linux User Group (see http://www.ctlug.org/ ), Austin Linux Enthusiasts (see http://ale.freeshell.org/ ), Austin Sun User Group (see http://www.austinsug.org/ ), and the Capital Area Central Texas Unix Society (CACTUS, see http://www.cactus.org/ ).

Then there's also the Austin chapter of the League of Professional System Administrators (see http://lopsa.org/mailman/listinfo/lopsa-us-tx-austin ).

Any of these groups could be useful resources for job hunting, although for personal reasons I'm kind of biased towards LOPSA-Austin and CACTUS.

Well, to a degree that's what you can do here, and there's no need to drive anywhere.

Well, that's true. Still, it's different when you have people in front of you...

I do understand that too. That's the reason I'm keeping this community focused on Central Texas - so that possibility exists. What might work is to get conversations going online, and if you find enough people who are participating and interested, you can all meet for coffee. Watch out though: you could start a group without even knowing it :)

That's very true. There are a number of social networking and other type groups in Austin already that may meet your needs.

Maybe you should start a forum on this site and see who bites.
