What are the most important areas/skills that a recruiter should constantly perfect?

So I'm going to steal from a LinkedIn question, just to get the discussion rolling:
"I am just wondering - if a recruiter has worked for some long time in this business, what are the skills that constantly need polishing? What new skills can a recruiter develop to grow as a professional?"
I'm genuinely interested in your thoughts.
Cheers,
Matt

Personally, I think the most important area is the recruiter's personality. To be honest, I don't think that is an area that people can polish or be taught. What I mean by that is genuine personality will show through when someone really cares and most of us that are fairly intelligent can see through fake people. Along with genuine personality, everything else will just fall into place, such as calling back and check on the person you helped find a job or with the senior hiring engineer that you just helped to find the right engineer to add to his/her team.

I continually try to improve. Who is done trying to improve?
An area that probably needs attention in our industry as a whole is gaining a relationship with candidates so that there is trust and honesty with regard to all their job search activities.
This ties into the whole comment above, caring about the candidates and their careers and working with them in depth vs. just screening quickly.
When you take the time to lay this ground work it makes the whole recruitment process so much more smooth.
Do you know there are Recruiters out there that don't even ask about the candidates job search activities?
Cheers! April
