Instructional design is sometimes interchangeable with curriculum design, pedagogy, &/or learning theory.
It can be applied to training exercises, "lesson plans," scripts, interactive multimedia, and public speaking.

I have done all of these. I received formal training under some of these names (including an M.Ed.), but the similarities are more important than the differences.
